The Suicide Squad first debuted in 1959 in The Brave and the Bold #25, but readers are more likely familiar with the motley crew from the John Ostrander-penned comics starting in 1987. This version of the Squad was directed by Amanda Waller, a government official who is not above breaking the law to fulfill her goals --- all in the name of national security, of course. Criminals on the Squad are essentially off on work release, performing what would be normally be considered suicide missions for the government.

Amanda Waller still leads this team in the new Suicide Squad movie, which hit theaters this summer. She's joined by Rick Flag, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc, El Diablo, Enchantress, Slipknot, Katana, Harley Quinn, and the Joker. While only a few could have been considered household names before this summer, with the arrival of the film more of DC's biggest and baddest villains will be known worldwide. Not exactly a great way to stay a secret government task force, but what can you do?

In honor of the movie's release, we've gathered some great fan art of the Suicide Squad characters in their recent incarnations, tattoos and all. No surprise, there's a lot of Harley Quinn (she's a beloved character with an amazing look in the new movie), but you'll see plenty of the other team members as well. This is the gallery you want to look at when you're feeling bad. This is the best Suicide Squad fan art.
