‘Black Panther’ Is a ‘Geo-Political Action Adventure’

We’re still a few years away from Marvel’s Black Panther movie, which is going to be a big deal for a few reasons: it offers the studio’s first superhero of color in their own solo film, it’s set in a foreign country, and it’s the last MCU film before Avengers: Infinity War — so yeah, it’s going to be major. We have several films to get through before then, but Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has a few details on the upcoming project, its genre and why it’s so important.

In a chat with Empire (via CBM), Feige spoke about Black Panther and said, “This one is important,” as not only does it feature a black superhero, but it has a “primarily African-American cast.” He went on:

Not only do you get an unbelievable lead character, but you also get all of Wakanda which is a whole new setting and culture to explore.

Creed director Ryan Coogler is in talks to direct the film, and like other Marvel features, this one will have its own tone and sub-genre. Feige says:

It’s a big geo-political action adventure that focuses on the family and royal struggle of T’Challa in Wakanda, and what is means to be a king. T’Challa’s story is very important to us as it links to the next Avengers films, which is why we brought it forward.

Indeed, Black Panther is the last film before the two-part Infinity War, so whatever happens in this film will help set the stage for the most epic Marvel outing yet. No pressure, though.

Chadwick Boseman will make his debut as the new MCU superhero in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016. His solo film is set to hit theaters in 2018.
