Ben Affleck Reveals Deathstroke Footage
There were a lot of rumors about perennial DC Comics bad guy Deathstroke showing up in Suicide Squad. He’s gonna be in the movie! (He wasn’t.) He’s gonna be a hired assassin competing with the Suicide Squad! (He didn’t.) He’s the breakout character in the movie! (He wasn’t.) Scott Eastwood’s gonna play him! (He didn’t.) So, so many stories about this character who wound up not being in the movie at all, in any way.
Turns out Deathstroke wasn’t in Suicide Squad, but it sure looks like you can expect to see him soon, either in Zack Snyder’s Justice League or perhaps Affleck’s own solo Batman film. Check out the footage that Justice League star Ben Affleck just tweeted:
That is Deathstroke all right, looking stylish as heck and fairly similar to the version of him from the very popular Batman: Arkham Asylum series of games. A mercenary and assassin for hire, Deathstroke is one of the DC Universe’s most feared hand-to-hand fighters, and one of the few guys who can go toe-to-toe with Batman (so we’re already crossing our fingers for a Batman/Deathstroke rumble.) He’s also got just one eye, which is why his mask often has two different colored sides, and sometimes only one eye hole (the one in the footage above appears to have two).
My favorite piece of Deathstroke trivia: The character was introduced in 1980 in the pages of the book New Teen Titans as “The Terminator.” And for a while, that’s how he was primarily known, as the Terminator. Then a little movie called The Terminator came out, and even though DC’s Terminator beat Schwarzenegger by several years, everyone’s favorite one-eyed assassin suddenly looked like a copycat. And so he started going by Deathstroke. Which is a pretty cool name, even if it’s a nonsense word.
Don’t expect to hear him called the Terminator in Justice League or a Batfleck movie, but he’ll always be the Terminator to me. Justice League opens in theaters on November 17, 2017.
