Ever since the Ghostbusters reboot has been announced (with an all-female cast) the film has been harshly judged, sight unseen. Today, director Paul Feig has officially revealed the Ghostbusters trailer, so now we can judge the film on its own merits. And? It actually looks pretty good!

Eagle-eyed viewers will also notice an easter egg leading to a viral site set up to promote the film.

That leads to ParanormalStudiesLab.com and this new featurette on the making of the film:

If you’re looking to find out what the film is about (besides busting ghosts), the official plot synopsis doesn’t really help:

Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of hilarious new characters. Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. This summer, they’re here to save the world!

They’re here to save the world! OK, we kinda gathered that much. We do know that original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver will all return for cameos, along with another famous face from the original, Slimer. Charles Dance also has a role in the film that sounds very similar to that of Walter Peck, the EPA inspector with no dick. Here’s how Feig described each of the main characters in the film:

• Erin Gilbert, a particle physicist, academic firebrand, spectral warrior.
• Jillian Holtzmann, a nuclear engineer, munitions expert, and proton wrangler.
• Abby Yates, a paranormal researcher, supernatural scientist, and entity trapper.
• Patty Tolan, a ghost tracker, municipal historian, and metaphysical commando

The film’s villain Rowan, which was been confirmed to look a lot like the ghost from the iconic logo, will be played by Neil Casey, an actor you probably haven’t seen much. He was a former SNL and Inside Amy Schumer writer who got to know Feig on the set of his short-lived Yahoo! series Other Space. Feig described Rowan thusly:

Our villain ghost is an executed murderer, a Ted Kazinski type…who has left behind a manifesto of how he wants to change and destroy the world. When his execution is hit by a supercharged electrical storm, he is turned into a powerful ghost able to rouse other villainous spirits from the ghost world to carry out the ever-expanding plans of his manifesto.

There are a lot of shots of ghosts in this trailer, but we don’t seem to get a great look at this Rowan character, though we do see evidence that he’s roused other villainous spirits. Another interesting twist is that these ghosts are able to possess humans, turning our Ghostbusters against each other.

Ghostbusters opens in theaters on July 15.
