M. Night Shyamalan’s Next Movie Will Be an ‘Unbreakable’ Sequel
M. Night Shyamalan’s Split is a strange kind of superhero movie of its own. James McAvoy’s character has a multiple personality disorder that manifests itself like a superpower, more like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing than how multiple personalities work in the real world. But this isn’t the director’s first foray into the superhero movie realm — and it’s not the last. Shyamalan announced that after Split, his next movie is going to be a sequel to his 2000 superhero flick Unbreakable. (This post contains some SPOILERS for Split, so if you don’t want those, then you’d better… split.)
While talking to Uproxx about his current film, Shyamalan revealed that he’d decided to return to the world of Bruce Willis’ superhero: “I do intend on making a final Unbreakable movie and I’m intending on doing it next.” He added, “Yeah, I’m still close to Bruce and everybody. And obviously I’m still close to James [McAvoy] and still in touch with Sam [L. Jackson] and all that stuff. So, hopefully that becomes a reality very soon.”
Without getting too spoiler-y (but stop reading if you haven’t seen it), there’s a reason Unbreakable 2: More Unbreakabler is coming next. In the first one, Samuel L. Jackson plays a comic book shop owner who helps Bruce Willis realize that he has superpowers. Willis appears in a final scene in Split and says “Mr. Glass,” which is Jackson’s character’s name. So it sounds like the sequel, or, technically, final film in a trilogy, will see McAvoy and Willis’ characters either face off or team up for an Avenger Initiative of their own.
Split is currently in theaters.
