Marvel’s animated offerings have made no secret of following the films, between Guardians of the Galaxy and Avenger subsets like Ultron Revolution, and now Spider-Man is going back to basics. Not only will the current Ultimate Spider-Man come to a close in January, Disney XD will launch Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2017.

Word of the new series comes from USA Today, who add that the “back to basics” series will be headed up by story editor Kevin Shinick and supervising director Philip Pignotti, previously of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble. Marvel’s Spider-Man will take a cue or two from Spider-Man: Homecoming in focusing on the character’s earliest days, while Disney XD boss Marc Buhaj says:

Spider-Man is the biggest action hero in the world. He is an iconic character whose duality makes him both relatable and aspirational for the Disney XD audience. [The new series is] a fresh take on a beloved classic that will engage both new and existing Spidey fans with its compelling drama, exciting action and the signature sense of comedy.

The Ultimate Spider-Man will end with its fourth season in January, airing a two part “Graduation Day” finale battle to save the city. It isn’t clear when the new series might bow (sometime close to the movie’s July 7 date is a good guess), but what should we hope for from Marvel’s Spider-Man?
