A San Francisco crowd got an early look at the first proper trailer for ThunderCats at WonderCon, and now you can check it out right here on ComicsAlliance. Billed as a 21st century re-imagining of the popular 1980s cartoon, Warner Bros. Animation's new ThunderCats looks like a slick amalgamation of Lord of the Rings-level fantasy and classic anime action, with an obvious reverence for the original work. The series is set to debut in June on Cartoon Network.

The re-imagined animated series based on the beloved 80s classic tells the tale of a hero's epic journey to fulfill his ultimate destiny. On Third Earth, the kingdom of Thundera is being threatened by the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra and young heir to the throne Lion-O embarks on a great quest to take his rightful place as king. The unlikely champion, joined by his faithful comrades Tygra, Cheetara, Panthro, WilyKit, WilyKat and his loyal pet Snarf, must work together to save their world from darkness.

The new ThunderCats is produced by Japanese animation house STUDIO4°C and Warner Bros. Animation, including producers/writers Sam Register, Michael Jelenic, Todd Casey and Ethan Spaulding, who between them have contributed to the success of such animated hits as Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Wonder Woman animated feature, among other projects.

Larry Kenney, the voice actor who performed the role of Lion-O in the original series, returns to the world of ThunderCats as the voice of Claudus.
