Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan franchise doesn’t look to be going anywhere just yet, and TV could always use more female leads, so is Red Sonja about to raise her sword? A new report suggests none other than X-Men maestro Bryan Singer himself is working on an “R-rated” TV take on the famed character, likely engineered for cable.

Take this with a grain of salt for the moment, but BleedingCool claims Singer has partnered with Red Sonja franchise owner Luke Lieberman and Jason Taylor for a new TV series based on the character, likely to be shopped to premium cable networks like HBO, Showtime or even Netflix, in order to accommodate the so-called “R-rating.” Singer would direct the project and producer with Stephen L’Heureux and his Solipsist Films.

Created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, Red Sonja first appeared in Conan the Barbarian comics back in 1975, graduating to her own film in 1985 starring Brigette Nielson in the title role and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan. It remains unknown if Schwarzenegger could have any involvement in the new project.

We’ll keep an eye out for new details, but would an adult-aimed Red Sonja stoke a network like HBO’s fancy? Watch the original trailer below:
