Good news today for those of us who are obsessed with Japanese children's media from 20 years ago: This week, Shout Factory announced a DVD release of the complete series of Gekisou Sentai Carranger, scheduled to hit shelves on April 25, 2017.

American audiences are probably most familiar with Carranger as the source material for 1997's Power Rangers Turbo, but even with Shout Factory's recent releases of other Super Sentai series, I had my doubts that they'd actually get around to this one. See, the thing about Carranger is that while it's definitely an official part of the long-running superhero franchise, it's also built as a parody that takes a far more comedic approach to its material.

Which is how you get episodes like the one where the Rangers are baked into a giant pizza:

Here's the official summary from Shout Factory:

Dappu, a young alien, is forced to leave his home planet after it is destroyed by a wild gang of thugs who terrorize planets before ultimately blowing them up. When Dappu learns that the gang's next target is Earth, he discovers that five humans posses Carmagic, a special magic that allows the heroes to transformer into the Gekisou Sentai Carranger. They may be the only force on the planet that can save it from the dangerous space gang!

With the April 25 release, Carranger joins Kyoryu Sentai ZyurangerGosei Sentai DairangerNinja Sentai Kakuranger, and Chouriki Sentai Ohranger in their line of American Super Sentai releases, and honestly, that's about three seasons further than I thought they'd ever get with what has turned out to be a pretty amazing project. And while I'd love to see them release the rest of the series that have been used for Power Rangers, I'd also definitely be interested in seeing them take on the 16 seasons before the show came to America. I mean, really, we all deserve to see JAKQ.
