Fan art tends to pay special attention to the character, allowing the artist to reinterpret and reimagine that character in a number of different styles. Andrew Ross MacLean does that on occasion, giving Ninja Turtle Leonardo a gruffer, more turtle-like look or creating a playful portrait of Batgirl. But frequently, his fan art explores not just the characters but the style of other creators, offering tributes to Moebius, Mike Mignola and Jack Kirby. It's likely that careful attention to the styles of other artists that informs MacLean's own style, which adds surrealistic touches to realistic depictions and blends bits of Golden Age American comics with Japanese woodblock prints and a manga-influenced sensibility.

MacLean is one of the talents behind Meatspace, a comic about a cyborg war veteran trying to solve his son's murder from inside a MMORPG, as well as Department O, a horror mystery comic written by Jamie Gambell. You can check out Gambell and MacLean's short comic, Samurai Billy, online, and follow MacLean on deviantART and Tumblr.
