The seeds of a potential DCU movieverse expansion may have been quietly planted yesterday with the announcement that actress Angela Basset has been cast to play Amanda Waller in the upcoming "Green Lantern" motion picture starring Ryan Reynolds. Of course, it's just as likely that Warner Bros. is using fan service to fuel Internet speculation. Let's discuss!

Despite key roles throughout the DCU as the director of The Suicide Squad and Checkmate's White Queen, Waller's not directly related to Green Lantern's origin story by a long shot, which means her role in the film would seem to serve a world-building purpose. Waller's character has also been linked to David Goyer's pending "Super Max" film, meaning there's already potential for Bassett to reprise her role should Warner Bros. decide to link the films.

Bassett also already has some DCU experience having played Linda lake in the 1991 "The Flash" television episode "Beat the Clock," which means a cinematic encounter with the Scarlet Speedster down the road shouldn't present her with any real culture shock - especially after GL wraps.

So could Bassett's Waller be developed into a role that links separate DC hero films for a JLA franchise ala Samuel L. Jackson's role as Nick Fury in the growing Avengers movieverse? It's too soon to tell for sure, but I'd definitely keep an eye out for her Bassett as Warner decides how to handle its other flagship superhero films.
