Coming in July from Top Shelf Productions is Any Empire, the new graphic novel by Nate Powell, author of Swallow Me Whole, winner of the 2009 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Novel. In Any Empire, Powell deals explicitly with the themes of war and violence as they're experienced in America's heartland by following the lives of three GI Joe-obsessed kids as they grow into adults. The book will take the form of a 304-page hardcover graphic novel, and you can check out a 16-page preview right here at ComicsAlliance.

Any Empire is Powell's much anticipated follow-up to Swallow Me Whole, a dark meditation on medicated adolescence and mental illness whose critical acclaim was unanimous. Powell's new book continues his focus on children's perceptions of the world, but asks how kids' views on violence change as they grow and become conscious of reality.

Any Empire will go on sale in July, just in time for Comic-Con International in San Diego, and can be pre-ordered now from Top Shelf and Things From Another World.

ANY EMPIRE by Nate Powell

Nate Powell, hailed by the London Times as "a writer-artist of genius," is back.

His new book, Any Empire, is a vivid examination of war and violence, and their trickle-down effects on middle America. First, a group of small-town kids find themselves bound together by geography, boredom, and a string of mysterious turtle mutilations. Years later, with Army tanks rolling through the streets of their hometown, these young adults are forced to confront painful questions of privilege, duty, betrayal, and courage.

Any Empire recalls aimless summers of Nancy Drew and GI Joe, treehouses and army surplus stores... but when fantasy starts to bleed into reality, whose mission will be accomplished? -- a 304-page deluxe hardcover graphic novel, 6.5" x 9.5"
