However, it was not until 1959 that Aquaman’s origin as an Atlantean would be revealed, setting him on the road that would lead him to becoming royalty.

Mera’s debut came a few years later in 1963’s Aquaman #11. Originally an alien queen from the other-dimensional kingdom of Xebel, Mera fled to Earth when her kingdom was seized by the villain Leron. She met Aquaman and Aqualad, who helped return her to power, but her interactions with Aquaman eventually brought her back to Earth permanently, and they became a couple.

In addition to fighting for peace in the seas and protecting Atlantis, Mera and Aquaman have both served as members of the Justice League, with Aquaman being a founding member.
