The current Venom series has been a bit of an enigma. It doesn't quite explain what happened to Flash Thompson, and has flipped the roles a bit to the point that the new host, Lee Price, is a bad egg who wants to do crimes, and the symbiote is the angel on his shoulder, trying to convince him not to. However everything changes next month as the original Venom, Eddie Brock, returns to the comic, and potentially returns to the role. Check out a first look at Mike Costa and Gerardo Sandoval's Venom #6.

While they say nothing ever changes forever in comics, and eventually everything cycles back to status-quo, Eddie Brock hasn't been Venom for roughly thirteen years or so, and in the intervening years the symbiote has been worn by villains like Mac Gargan, AKA The Scorpion, and heroes such as the previously mentioned Flash Thompson.

Eddie himself has been through a lot; first as a cancer survivor, then as Anti-Venom, before becoming the symbiote hunting Toxin, and most recently he's been roped in by the US government as a consultant in tracking and destroying symbiotes as part of its efforts to contain Carnage.

In May, Venom reaches its 150th issue, so it's no surprise Marvel wants to get back to the most iconic character in the role. There hasn't been a solid Venom vs Spider-Man story in a good, long time and there isn't necessarily anything wrong with going back to the familiar if it results in a good story.
