Elizabeth Banks Is Green and Scaly in New Rita Repulsa ‘Power Rangers’ Photo

You know that Power Rangers movie that still seems to be happening, despite there being absolutely no reason for it to be? You know how Elizabeth Banks is playing the villain? You know how the villain is Sexy Rita Repulsa (which is something I never thought I’d ever type unless I was looking for bad Halloween costumes)? The mind continues to boggle at every turn with this movie, and it’s honestly impossible at this point to predict whether it will be good, bad, or so bad it’s good. But Elizabeth Banks is a talented actress who’s clearly not afraid to put on a lot of weird makeup and outfits for her characters, as evidenced by all four of the Hunger Games movies. Lionsgate released a new image of her Rita Repulsa, complete with evil scepter.

Her updated costume is nothing like the horned babushka look of the original, but rivals it in the “there’s a lot going on here” factor. We’ve got green scaly armor that looks kind of old or like it’s been through the wash a few too many times. Her sleeves don’t attach to her shirt, which is a very ’90s alt rock kid thing to do, and she’s either wearing a lot of necklaces, or she found some green rope and figured she might as well accessorize. There’s also a lot of face-vein stuff going on, which I can’t explain. The rest of her says, “I just crawled out of a swamp” while her cute wedge boots say, “Still ready to party though.” The only thing carried over from the original costume is the scepter through which Rita channels her evil dark magic, which actually looks pretty cool in this photo. Points given for not forcing her to fight the Rangers in stiletto heels, which happens way too much with female superheroes and villains these days, but the same amount of points is also deducted for the obvious boob armor. Do better, costume departments.

Power Rangers also stars Ludi Lin, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G., Dacre Montgomery, Bryan Cranston, and Bill Hader, and will be morphin’ its way into theaters March 24, 2017.
