Mark Millar’s comic books have inspired some mixed reactions among fans and critics, but the author’s works have also inspired some entertaining films, including last year’s Kingsman: The Secret Service and the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Millar has a handful of projects in development based on his books, and you can add another to the pile, as his fantasy series Empress, with artist Stuart Immonen, is the latest set to make the jump from page to screen.

THR reports that Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum will produce the movie adaptation of Empress, with xXx: The Return of Xander Cage scribe F. Scott Frazier writing the screenplay. Roth and Kirschenbaum are also producing the xXx sequel, while Roth’s previous credits include The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Alice in Wonderland — should that give you any idea of where Empress might be heading.

Described as “part Star Wars, part Guardians of the Galaxy,” Empress centers on the wife of an intergalactic dictator and the battle that ensues with her estranged husband when she takes off with their kids. Here’s some more info on the story, which sounds like Kramer vs. Kramer in space:

The comic, co-created and drawn by Stuart Immonen, centers on the wife of a galactic dictator (a la Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon) who makes the decision to leave her evil husband and take her three kids with her. With the aid of a bodyguard, she escapes with her brood — Aine, her 15-year-old daughter who wants to be with her father; Adam, her gentle soul of a 10-year-old son who she knows would not survive the trials ahead to be an elite ruler; and Puck, her 18-month-old — to her home world. But the dictator husband, with armies at his disposal, isn’t going to let her go without a fight.

Empress has garnered mostly positive reviews since the first issue hit stands in April, while issue #2 arrives this week. As it turns out, Millar has been tweeting about the film adaptation since early April, and it looks as though an actress has already been selected for the leading role:

Feel free to speculate about the identity of the actress above to your heart’s content. The Empress news arrives just days after the rights to two of Millar’s other titles — American Jesus and Supercrook — were also optioned for feature film adaptations.
