Everyone loves trivia about their favorite animated features and series, but with over 100 years of animation history behind us right now, there’s always some new obscure fact to learn. That’s why ComicsAlliance is going deep into the minutiae of your favorite names in cartoons in this continuing video series. You think you know cartoons? Well, here’s a few things you might not know!

This week we're taking a look at '90s cult favorite, Exosquad! Although Exosquad was originally conceived simply to be another boys' action robot cartoon in the style of Transformers or Gobots, in the course of development the series was given a more sophisticated storyline with more mature themes due to the influence of the increasing popularity of Japanese animation in the '90s, to the point that the show is often referred to as "the American anime." This video takes a look at the history of the series, from its conception and creation, to its untimely cancellation, to adaptations in various media, both successful and unsuccessful.

Show notes:

  • You can get season one of Exosquad on DVD here, or watch it on Amazon Video here.
  • That's...about it for available Exosquad merchandise and video. Season 2 used to be up on Hulu, but is not currently available. Maybe it will be back some day?
  • If you want to buy some used toys and VHS tapes, maybe this link can hook you up.
