‘Kingsman 2’ Official Title, Concept Art and Details Revealed
Kingsman: The Secret Service, based on the Icon comic by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, was the big sleeper hit of 2015, its nihilistic sense of black humor and highly stylized action resonating with a surprisingly large audience. Naturally, a sequel couldn’t have been far off, and while director Matthew Vaughn has already confirmed that he’ll write and direct a follow-up for release on June 16, 2017, basic details have yet to come to light.
The production team has already made the announcement that Julianne Moore will portray the villain in the scheduled film — what a time to be alive! — but Empire Magazine (via ComicBookMovie) has the full scoop on this hotly anticipated project.
First off, the official title of the film will be Kingsman: The Golden Circle, in what we can only hope is not an obscure allusion to the Knights of the Golden Circle, a secret society in the 1800s dedicated to preserving and expanding the practice of slavery. The images depicting the fallen Kingsman headquarters, the facade masking the base of American espionage agency Statesman, and Poppyland, the compound where Moore’s villain Poppy keeps her lair, correspond to a general outline of the upcoming sequel’s plot. Empire’s report states that an attack on Kingsman HQ sends Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) to America in search of refuge at Statesman, where a head honcho played by Halle Berry and a “swaggering, sharpshooting cowboy” named Jack will join their cause. They will need to join forces if they hope to defeat Julianne Moore’s character, who, like the actress playing her, will be very powerful.
The Empire item also includes some rather routine quotes from Vaughn about having reservations for a sequel unless a good idea could back it up, and then miraculously waking up one morning with an idea to sustain another Kingsman installment. That’s all well and good, but the really intriguing part comes when he makes mention of assorted elements that will factor into the plot of the film, such as “a skiing sequence, a barroom brawl, robot dogs, one-armed henchmen, and the heroes being attacked by what Vaughn calls, ‘a massive f***ing frankfurter.’” Who had ‘giant hotdog monster attacks’ on their BINGO scorecard for Kingsman’s sequel?
