We’ve still one more episode to conclude Season 1 of Noah Hawley’s FX Legion, though the series took a major step toward comic continuity with the reveal of its Shadow-y big bad. Now, Hawley reveals the potential for Season 2 to skew even more X-mentioning, perhaps even introducing Charles Xavier himself.

You’re warned of Legion Season 1 spoilers from here on out, as well as a few comic ones, but the most recent “Chapter 7” barely tiptoed around the fact that David Haller’s father at least resembles Professor Charles Xavier, and also uses a wheelchair. The episode also formally identified David’s tormentor as the comic Shadow King, suggesting even greater X-Men connections to come.

Speaking in conference call with reporters (h/t Blastr), Hawley cautioned against getting too bogged down in comics, but nonetheless promised more Season 2 rewards for fans:

As we do with Fargo fans who are really familiar with that world, they appreciate certain connections and being rewarded for knowing the story so well. At the same time, my goal is to always use character as a way to have a conversation, and tell a story that was my story and was interesting to me to try and get to the heart of who this character is and this journey for him without re-enacting storylines from the comic book. So you won’t see the show suddenly be beholden to the comic books for storyline, but you may see ideas, characters or images that are familiar to you.

And while Patrick Stewart gamely expressed an interest in appearing, Hawley seemed reasonably optimistic Season 2 would work toward some Professor X presence:

I think that’s something we’re definitely going to approach. It’s a creative conversation, but it’s also a sort of corporate conversation, you know, on some level, in terms of the movie studio and their relationship to the X-Men and the characters they want in the movies and want to protect potentially.

And were we to want to have Professor X on the show, or even Patrick Stewart on the show, James McAvoy or one of those actors, [it] is a conversation both with the actor and with the studio. So, I don’t know, I haven’t really dived into that quandary yet, but certainly I need to start thinking about it.

We’ll see what other X-Men connections arise in Legion’s first season finale this Wednesday, while Hawley says the ten-episode Season 2 is targeted for a similar airdate next year.
