There's no doubt that the preeminent painter of elderly superheroes is Alex Ross. The artist of such classics as Marvels and Kingdom Come has built his storied career upon countlessly beautiful images of comic book icons like Superman, Batman and the members of the Justice Society of America in a perhaps more mature light than they are typically depicted. But a new talent from Sweden has given Ross a run for his money with a series of paintings featuring a senior citizen superhero performing acts that are perhaps less than inspiring. Check after the cut for a selection of the work of Andreas Englund. On his portfolio website, Englund wrote, "Humour can be the carrier of messages that are otherwise hard to convey. For me, it liberates my thoughts and ideas from pretentiousness while at the same time it opens doors to new routes and angles."
