Forget Avengers vs. X-Men or A-Babies vs. X-Babies, the big crossover news from Marvel at San Diego Comic-Con was Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel, a one-off special episode of the Disney Channel show that will mark the first animated crossover between Disney and Marvel properties. As should be expected, the special episode of the long-running (Well, for Disney Channel animated shows, at least; it debuted in 2008) series will guest-star Marvel characters who are already familiar to mainstream audiences as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk find themselves transported to the series' Danville setting where they have to team up with the eponymous Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher to not only find their way home, but also defend the town against the likes of Red Skull, Whiplash, Venom and MODOK.

The episode marks the first time characters belonging to Marvel and corporate parent Disney have met "in story" since the publisher was purchased by Disney in 2009; the two companies have worked together on smaller synergistic projects in the interim, amongst them Marvel's two Castle graphic novels, Tron-themed variant covers and, of course, the Marvel Universe animated block on Disney XD. Earlier this month, Disney confirmed rumors that it was developing an animated movie based upon the little-known Marvel superhero team Big Hero 6.

Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel will debut on the Disney Channel in 2013.
