Childhood gives you rose-tinted glasses about a lot of things, not least of which is the role toys played on your purchase decisions growing up. I can remember having a large collection of action figures from movies like Aliens and Batman and using them to recreate some of my favorite moments from the movie; if you had asked me then, I would have said that toys were only for playing, never imagining that the toy commercials on TV were probably what spiked my interest in the movies to begin with.

And while I won’t pretend like toys were ever anything but a marketing tool, I still find it hard to adjust to movies whose marketing departments use toys as a ‘first look’ for upcoming movies. Yesterday, for example, the new Power Rangers movie released its first look at the new design for Megazord via a new toy that will be hitting the market soon. It’s quite a different look from the original TV show, but chances are it will still be snapped up by the thousands once it goes on pre-sale.

Given the fact that this new Megazord looks to have a toned swimmer’s physique, I’ll be really curious to see how the vehicles all come together. Is it all nanotechnology instead of the Transformers-like assembly of the original Megazord? Or are there still a few Power Rangers squished in there? How will a Megazord with sex appeal play to fans of the original series? Will Men’s Fitness run a full page spread on getting the perfect Megazord body for Beach Season 2017? Inquiring minds want to know!

And if the term ‘Megazord’ means absolutely nothing to you, here’s the necessary backstory on the new Power Rangers movie:

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Power Rangers will blast is way into theaters on March 24, 2017.
