Rumor: ‘Justice League Dark’ Eyeing Colin Farrell as Constantine, Monica Bellucci as Xanadu
Guillermo del Toro’s exit from Justice League Dark (aka Dark Universe) at Warner Bros. left many confused as to how — or if — the studio would proceed without him. But with the studio’s anti-hero blockbuster Suicide Squad generating excitement, a new rumor suggests that not only is WB moving forward with del Toro’s script, but they’ve also got their eye on at least a couple of potential stars.
The rumor originates at Latino Review, who report that producer Scott Rudin has come aboard the Justice League Dark movie in the hopes to have it prepped to begin filming sometime next year. WB will continue developing the concept without del Toro directing, though they are still using his script which features the lineup of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Dead Man and Etrigan the Demon.
In addition, the report suggests that while no roles have been cast as of yet, the studio is still interested in pursuing Ron Perlman, who was del Toro’s choice for Swamp Thing. They’re also claiming that Ewan McGregor has been previously offered the role of Constantine, but that WB now has their eye on Colin Farrell, who is also starring in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for the studio.
For the role of the enchanting Madame Xanadu, the studio is rumored to be eyeing Monica Bellucci, who was recently depressingly underused in Spectre. The report also suggests that WB wants a hispanic or black actress for Zatanna and a comedic type for Deadman.
WB hasn’t confirmed any of this information, which remains a rumor until the studio offers something more official. It’s quite possible that they’re still developing del Toro’s script without him, though it’s not clear how or if the film would fit in with their current DC superhero slate or if it would operate separately. Given that WB already has a full schedule set for those films over the next few years, Justice League Dark might be a fringe project, if it’s still happening at all.
