Some wondered, when it was announced that a third and final Wolverine movie was happening in 2017, if this meant that we’d see another appearance of his frenemy Sabretooth (brought to life onscreen by Liev Schreiber in 2009). Well, he didn’t end up in Logan, ultimately, but there was a plan in the works at one point to have him arrive for a few scenes towards the middle of the movie.

When CinemaBlend spoke to Logan screenwriter Scott Frank, he revealed that there was talk of having Schreiber reprise his role, but in the end that idea was thrown out.

There was a moment when we were thinking about, as I recall, Jim [Mangold] had an idea where when they were on the run, and they go to the gambling town, there may have been at that point they were going to see [Sabretooth] for help. He was going to be there for help. Now that you mention it! I wouldn’t swear to it, but we thought that would have been an interesting thing to do. And then for whatever reason we didn’t do it.

The reasons this didn’t come to pass are many, and could have just been something as mundane as a scheduling conflict or cutting the fat from the script during the final planning stages. Either way, it’s probably fine that he isn’t in the movie, as Logan seems to work just peachy without the addition of another character. Maybe it would have been fun to see another of Wolverine’s buddies back for one last ride, or maybe it would have just weighed the movie down unnecessarily.

Logan hits theaters this weekend.
