There's an insurmountable amount of hype surrounding Star Wars this year. From the figures to the books to the trading cards to the games and movies, if it has Star Wars in the name, people are excited. If you can somehow manage to tie one of those things to another, the hype levels begin approaching stratospheric levels. While we were told Star Wars Battlefront was going to be one of the first places we'd see the destitute landscape of Jakku, a planet that's been focused on quite a bit in trailers for The Force Awakens, we had little idea of what exactly that meant. With today's teaser trailer for the new map, questions of "What will it be like?" were immediately replaced with statements of "I want to go to there."

Taking place 29 years before The Force Awakens, the Battle of Jakku happened about a year after the Battle of Endor, which signaled the first indication the Rebel Alliance might rid the galaxy of the Empire's influence. There were numerous conflicts after the destruction of the second Death Star, as much of the literature under the "Journey to The Force Awakens" banner has revealed. Though Jakku's present in lots of Star Wars' recent content, Battlefront will present our first actual on-the-ground glimpse of that landmark conflict, including watching those massive Star Destroyers fall from orbit in magnificent fashion.

The teaser trailer above doesn't offer much actual gameplay, though it appears to be rendered in-engine. The footage is more of a primer for what to expect from that massive encounter. Who knew Jakku was going to be such a focal point of the continuing battle for the safety of the galaxy? I mean there are stories about small engagements in all of the "JTTFA" tales, but few offer anything on the scale of what's going down on Jakku. Even based on the movie footage so far, it merely appears as if Jakku was home to a rogue Star Destroyer crash, not necessarily an all-out offensive from both sides of the Galactic Civil War.

Outside of the Battle of Hoth, which was a rather lopsided victory for the Empire, we haven't seen incredible ground battles like that in playable form. The Battle of Yavin was a big space battle sure, as was the Battle of Endor, but even that fight's ground engagement wasn't anything on the par of what we're seeing take place here on Jakku.

The Battle of Jakku map will be available free to everyone who purchases Star Wars Battlefront on Nov. 17, but those who pre-order the game will get access to the fight one week earlier than the rest of the playerbase.

POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING

We know there's a big Star Destroyer crashed on the planet at the start of The Force Awakens, and we can see lots of wreckage present already in the footage above. However, it's that final shot of the plummeting Star Destroyer that has us wondering if we'll actually see the Inflictor (the ship Rey is inspecting in the latest movie trailer) crash into the planet surface as detailed in the novel, Lost Stars. Wouldn't that be an interesting game mode to win the war before the ship collides with the battlefield? Too bad it doesn't sound like you'll be able to fight your way through the interior of the Inflictor as Thane Kyrell and the Rebels.

END SPOILER WARNING
