Black Bolt

As tends to be the case with major casting announcements, Marvel and ABC got ahead of The Inhumans curve to reveal its major players before they could be identified on set by prying fans. That said, pry away into Black Bolt’s costume, and a CG Lockjaw stand-in with these first photos!

Marvel recently announced that actor Anson Mount has been cast in the largely mute role of Black Bolt in the Inhumans TV show, debuting later this year on ABC. As king of the secretive superhuman race, and as the wielder of a voice that can level cities, Black Bolt is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, able to hold his own against tough guys like Hulk, Thor, and even Thanos. He also boasts the slickest superhero costume Jack Kirby ever designed. But none of that is the best thing about Black Bolt. The best thing about Black Bolt is that his real name is Blackagar Boltagon. We're such fans of the name that we thought we'd apply its basic principles to some other great comics characters to see how it sits on them.

Black Bolt is going to space prison, and writer Saladin Ahmed is joining artist Christian Ward to show how he gets out in a new solo comic focusing on the Inhumans' silent leader. We've previously learned that Royals will focus on the Inhuman Royal Family journeying through space, and apparently this book focuses on Black Bolt being separated from them and imprisoned on an alien world.

Marvel Television recently announced plans for an Inhumans TV series, launching in late 2017 on ABC and centered on the Inhuman Royal Family that was dreamed up by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee in the mid-1960s. The Inhumans are a superpowered offshoot of humanity created by interfering aliens, ruled over by the House of Agon. The members of that Royal Family have yet to appear onscreen, despite the recurring presence of Inhumans on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. We've put together an introductory guide to the House of Agon's core members, including the king and queen, and their big dog too, so that new fans can get a sense of who's who. For those old fans who know the characters only too well, we've also voted on the best and worst of them, and placed them in order.

You know how much we love cosplay at ComicsAlliance; we put a spotlight on it every week. Fans who create their own costumes and dress up as their favorite heroes are some of the most passionate and enthusiastic people in comics, and the level of talent and committment on display at conventions seems to get more impressive every year. If there isn't a Carol Corps cosplay meet-up or a whole dang Spider-Verse at a show, you'll probably go home disappointed. So it's great to see Marvel paying tribute to these fans with a selection of cosplay variant covers on several of its All-New All-Different launches this fall. Cosplay connoisseurs will see some familiar faces among the cosplayers, including Birds of Play's Amanda Lynne Shafer, cosplay legend Yaya Han, and Marvel's own in-house cosplay blogger Judy Stephens as Captain Marvel.
