Superhero publishers sure love a variant cover theme month, and Marvel's latest is coming in from a decidedly educational angle. In November, Marvel will release five covers celebrating the different aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) with the goal of encouraging its fans to pursue their dreams, whatever field they may lie in.

The week's over! You did it, and did it in magnificent style. But while you've been off working and living and doing all those things that humans do, what have you missed in the world of comics? With Weekender, ComicsAlliance is here to give you a heads-up on some of the stories that you might have overlooked, and to showcase some great writing on comics for you to enjoy over toasted croque-monsieur this weekend.

On sale now, the first issue of the new Spider-Man 2099 series by writer Peter David, artist Will Sliney and colorist Antonio Fabela is the very definition of a light comic. It's loaded with jokes and goofy asides -- most of them pretty funny. There's a throwaway villain. The colors are bright and appealing. It's mostly a really enjoyable read. Until the one moment that bothered the hell out of me. Expect some spoilers below.

Dan Slott must have been saving up his jokes over the past 16 months or so. The Amazing Spider-Man #1, the issue that officially reintroduces Peter Parker to the Marvel Universe after a lengthy absence during which his body was under the control of Doctor Octopus, is chock full of laugh lines that really hit. Fearless Defenders #12 arrived in stores this week, the final issue of a series that in a short amount of time gained a cult following unlike any other in mainstream comics. Creators Cullen Bunn and Will Sliney confirmed yesterday what some readers feared after Fearless Defenders did not show up in Marvel's January solicitations this week -- the title will be concluding with issue #12.

During the ReEvolution panel at New York Comic-Con, Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso hinted at plans for a couple of new female-led comics, one of which he promised would be a "kick-ass team book."
