When there are four launch titles as bold, inventive and unique as Young Animal's line-up, it's hard to pick a stand-out, but Cecil Castellucci, Marley Zarcone and Kelly Fitzpatrick's Shade, The Changing Girl has established itself as a weird mix of deeply personal and super sci-fi high-concept, with one of the strongest collaborative voices in mainstream comics today This week, DC and Young Animal release the climax of Shade's first story, as Megan Boyer returns and wants her body back from the weird alien bird that stole it. ComicsAlliance caught up with Castellucci and Zarcone to talk about high school anxiety, Pinterest collaboration, and Shade's future in the larger DC Universe.

Since its debut last year with some of the most compelling titles on the stands, it's safe to say that the Young Animal line has had some success digging into the more obscure characters from DC's catalog. We've even got a Cave Carson book that features Wild Dog, and it's one of the best things going. With that in mind, it makes sense that the line's approach to Jack Kirby's Fourth World looks beyond the usual characters, like Orion and Mister Miracle, and puts the spotlight on someone else. Hence Bug: The Adventures of Forager.

Mother Panic, by Jody Houser and Tommy Lee Edwards, is about a new character who fights criminals as a high-tech masked vigilante in Gotham City. She wears a cape and a helmet with pointed ears, but her outfit is white, and she's clearly unaffiliated with Batman and his allies. In fact, when the premise was initially revealed, nobody was really sure if this was the Gotham of DC's Batman books, or a whole different take on that world. However, it's been set-up since the first issue that the Bat-Family have become aware of Mother Panic's activities. And in this third issue, she and Batwoman come face to face, leading to a fight and some weird angry flirting.
