Warren Ellis and Jon Davis-Hunt's The Wild Storm has so far lived up to its promise of reinventing the familiar through the most modern and forward thinking of lenses, creating a global spy conspiracy that brings together fan-favorite characters like Grifter, Voodoo and The Engineer. Next week sees the release of The Wild Storm #3, which features the return of one of Ellis' most popular creations, Jenny Sparks, radically re-imagined for a millennial age, and we have a preview of Jenny's new powers in action.

Jenny Sparks was originally created as the foul-mouthed, Union Jack-wearing Spirit of the 20th Century, and was first featured as a member of Stormwatch Black before going on to form The Authority. As the Spirit of the 20th Century, her powers were electricity based, and she had lived through the ups-and-downs of the preceding one-hundred years before passing away at the stroke of midnight as the world celebrated the dawn of a new century and new millennium.

I was a bit worried about The Wild Storm re-introducing Jenny Sparks, because the character was so intrisically tied to the previous century, and because Mark Millar and Frank Quitely introduced her successor, Jenny Quantum and made the deliberate choice that the Spirit of the 21st Century would be born in South-East Asia rather than England. However, judging by this preview, Ellis and Davis-Hunt have taken some cues from Jenny Quantum while radically reinterpreting her powers so she can travel between mobile devices.

The preview also features a number of nods to names that may sound familiar, such as Martian Manhunter, Commander Steel, and Dr. Mid-Nite. Ellis and Davis-Hunt are starting to tease multiversal weirdness with The Wild Storm, and I can't wait to see where it goes.
