At the time Netflix first confirmed an animated Castlevania series on its roster, it was a fair question how the animated venture might handle the video game franchise’s gorier elements. Well, if the first official poster is any indication, things are going to get real red, real fast.

Executive producer Adi Shankhar revealed a first look at the new series over Facebook, following Netflix’s official confirmation of the animated series debuting later this year. Adapting the plot of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, the four-part, half-houred “Part 1” season follows the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe. The series is also said to be “rated R,” and done in the vein of Game of Thrones.

Adventure Time executive producer Fred Seibert helmes the series with Shankhar, having previously hinted over Nickelodeon’s Nick Animation Podcast that his studio was finally able to act on rights to a video game property held in their possession for twelve years. The show is written by Transmetropolitan and Injection author Warren Ellis.

Time will tell when the series finally debuts footage or a formal premiere, so stay tuned in the meantime.
