The second volume of The Wicked + The Divine, Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s cult hit comic about a pantheon of pop stars, will hit shelves on July 1st compliments of publisher Image Comics, and ComicsAlliance is pleased to have an exclusive first look at the trailer that ushers its way into the mortal world. The title of the volume, which collects issues #6-11 of the series, shows off writer Gillen’s well-known penchant for puns: Fandemonium. (Volume 1, which centered on Lucifer, was The Faust Act.)

The series centers on 12 gods who, every 90 years, incarnate in the bodies of young people. For two years, they’re the world’s biggest stars, beloved, reviled, controversial, transcendent --- and then they die. One of them has been murdered, however, and the killer may be one of the other gods in the pantheon.

Among the gods featured in the trailer, set to the song “Pink Summer” by Summer Camp, are the flamboyant Innana, cocky Baal, fiery Baphomet, tragic Minerva, and the fearsome Morrigan, along with Laura Wilson --- the uber-fan whose own special destiny the trailer hints at. The gods’ looks and personalities call to mind pop stars of our own world --- David Bowie, Prince, Kanye West, and Daft Punk, among others --- but they have charisma all their own, thanks to Gillen’s razor-sharp dialogue and McKelvie’s masterfully hip character designs.

The pantheon has launched a legion of devoted cosplaying fans, sealing WicDiv’s place as one of the coolest, most compelling comics series currently being published --- and the trailer is sure to spark even more inspiration.
