Though critics so far have not been kind to Batman vs. Superman (currently at 32% on Rotten Tomatoes), one of the bright spots for the film has been the reception to Wonder Woman who, despite her minimal screen time, has earned highly positive reviews. Perhaps looking to capitalize on that word of mouth, Warner Bros. has wisely decided to reveal the first official photo from the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, including our first look at Hippolyta, Antiope and Menalippe.

The photo debuted over at Entertainment Weekly where they have some additional information on the film. The photo we see is from Themyscira, the island where the Amazon women live. Diana stands alongside her mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), and her aunts Antiope (Robin Wright) and Menalippe (Force Majeure’s Lisa Loven Kongsli).

According to EW, in the scenes on Themyscira, the three adult women struggle with how to deal with raising Diana. Hippolyta wants to shelter her on the island to keep her safe. Antiope wants to train her to be a ruthless warrior.

In what could be a controversial decision, you’ll notice that in this photo at least two of the characters (Wonder Woman and Hippolyta) are wearing high heels. It’s the same kind of footwear choice that brought a lot of heat on Jurassic World for having Bryce Dallas Howard running around in her heels. But director Patty Jenkins defends her decision and explains it thusly:

I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time—the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.

Probably why it’s very important to have a female director working on a Wonder Woman movie and not some middle-aged white dude. Check out the full photo below and make a note on your calendar for June 23, 2017 when Wonder Woman opens in theaters.
