You’ve Got A Giant Combination Robot Guardian In Me: Bandai Announces Voltron-Style Buzz Lightyear and Woody Toys
It seems like whenever we start to become desensitized to the mix-and-match mash-up nature of popular culture, something new comes along to shock us out of our doldrums. Whether it's Phineas And Ferb crossing over with Star Wars, Hello Kitty teaming with KISS, Archie's hometown of Riverdale getting devoured by zombies, or Minions advertising in the produce aisle of your local supermarket, mainstream society has adopted a comic-con mentality where all things coexist and cross-promote at all times, whether or not the combinations make any logical sense.
But even so, I don't think any of us foresaw a world where the stars of Toy Story would be reimagined as giant mecha-warriors, joining together to save earth from the kaiju threat of a mutated Trixie The Triceratops.
But that's what we got when Bandai and Bluefin Distribution announced a pair of new oversized Chogokin robots: the Chogokin Toy Story Combination Woody Robo Sheriff Star, which will hit shelves in December, and the Chogokin Toy Story Combination Buzz the Space Ranger Robo, shipping in January.
The Woody set contains individual Woody, Rex, Bullseye, Hamm, and Slinky Dog figures that combine to make up a single 9" defender, while the Buzz Lightyear robo package features Buzz, a space shuttle, a Big One rocket, and a pair of vending machine aliens, who assembled to create a 13" titan.
For those fortunate (and financially solvent) enough to get both, the two sets can be mixed together to create an extra-sized "Super-Robot" that can serve as the ultimate safeguard against Emperor Zurg's invading forces.
Each set will retail for $169.99, with pre-orders available now from online outlets and authorized Bluefin retailers. Watch the video below for a brain-melting animated glimpse at the new Toy Story mecha-mythology, and check out this site for a closer look at the full Chogokin collection.
