A complaint you sometimes hear about online multiplayer components of AAA video games is that you never get to play as the star or stars of the single-player campaign. Maybe that's why WB Games Montreal and Splash Damage designed the multiplayer aspect of Batman: Arkham Origins so that one player out of eight gets to actually wear the cape and cowl, at least for a round.

Check out the trailer for the multiplayer mode, which features "3 vs. 3 vs. 2" combat, below.

So it's the Joker's gang versus Bane's gang versus Batman and Robin. Players will get the chance to play as Bane and the Joker, too. How exactly four of the eight players end up being stuck as nameless thugs instead of Batman, Robin, the Joker, or Bane, we don't know. Maybe rock-paper-scissors? Or maybe other key characters like Deathstroke and Deadshot will join the fray eventually as unlockable characters or part of a DLC pack? Or there's always the Bats and Jokerz from the last first/third-person shooter set in Batman's neighborhood, Gotham City Impostors...

Batman: Arkham Origins will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PC on Oct. 25. [Update: apparently online multiplayer won't be on the Wii U version]
