If there’s one thing we’ve learned from our years on the Internet, it’s that there’s no aspect of comics that can’t be broken down and quantified in a single definitive list, preferably in amounts of five or ten. And since there’s no more definitive authority than ComicsAlliance, we’re taking it upon ourselves to compile Top Five lists of everything you could ever want to know about comics.

This week, we're casting our gaze at the greatest quarter-munching, joystick-waggling, button-mashing comic book video games.

For as long as there have been video game consoles and arcade machines, there have been games based on comic book characters trying to make the transition to the virtual world. While many of these games have been less than memorable, the past 20 years has seen a number of excellent adaptations and even some games that have not just defined a character, but an era of gaming as well.

We've come a long way from the old Atari Superman and Spider-Man games. Heck, we've come a long way from the likes of Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage, which you knew was popular since it was always rented out at Blockbuster. Truly though, the era of disc-based gaming is where comic book video games really started to shine, and as you'll see on this irrefutable list, there's plenty of reason why.
