Sarah Vaughn, Lan Medina and Jose Villarrubia's Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love --- while not officially a DC Rebirth title --- has been one of the most exciting titles released in the Rebirth era, mixing gothic horror, romance, and superheroes in a way the character was always crying out for.

The third and final issue is out next week, and DC has provided us with an exclusive extended preview of what is sure to be a somber and emotional finale.

Vaughn and Medina's take on Deadman is the sort of slightly left-field approach to superhero characters that made Vertigo such a success in the late '80s and early '90s, and its contrast of stakes between the magical threat of the mansion and the love triangle between Sam, Berenice and Nathan has provided an emotional core that readers have really hooked into.

Hopefully the critical and creative success of Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love spurs DC on to take more risks with long-standing characters that might work outside the tradition superhero milieu.
