‘Deadpool 2’ Gets Official Confirmation With Ryan Reynolds and Director Tim Miller Returning
Three days before Deadpool even hit theaters, word got around that Fox was already developing a sequel with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returning. Since then we’ve heard a lot about what to expect from the sequel (Cable, mostly) despite the fact that Fox had yet to make an official announcement. That changed today at CinemaCon, of course, where the studio made it all very officially official, confirming the return of both Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller for Deadpool 2.
Even before Deadpool became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time — worldwide — and Fox’s highest-grossing superhero film, a sequel was all but guaranteed. Reynolds finally found a role perfectly suited to his talents, and Miller made an impressive transition from visual effects work to feature filmmaking, on a conservative budget to boot.
Via Variety, Fox publicly announced Deadpool 2 at CinemaCon, confirming the return of Reynolds and Miller, who — along with Reese and Wernick — make the recipe complete. Plot details are somewhat scarce, but thanks to the Deadpool post-credits scene and interviews with Reese and Wernick and Reynolds, we do know that X-Force member Cable will appear as the primary antagonist in the sequel, which may very well pave the way for the X-Force film.
As of now there’s no official release date for Deadpool 2, but Fox has a couple of untitled Marvel projects on their schedule, so it shouldn’t be too long before the Merc With a Mouth returns to the big screen.
