"There can be only one." It's a catch phrase that immediately calls back to one singular franchise, The Highlander. Though the film and television series both came to a rather unspectacular close way, way back, they both revealed the best way to tell new Highlander stories was to set them all in the past. Good thing that's exactly what IDW is planning to do with its new series, Highlander: The American Dream.

Written by Scottish author Brian Ruckley and featuring art from Andrea Mutti and Vladimir Popov, Highlander: The American Dream will feature tales of Connor MacLeod (often viewed as the one true MacLeod) and his life before "The Gathering." If you're not sure what I'm talking about, it's all covered in the first film --- which is also the only one that really still holds up today. Sorry, Highlander II: The Quickening fans, but it's true. It's true.

Anyway, The American Dream promises to tell more tales of Connor's life as one of the Earth's immortal beings throughout history. That's a lesson well-learned from the television show that featured Duncan MacLeod, another immortal from the same clan as Connor, but who had left "The Game" (the immortal name for their battle against each other to be the last one standing). Look, nobody said the lineage of Highlander was easy to comprehend. However, by going back to Connor, the original protagonist of the franchise, and exploring his past leading up to the first film, IDW should alleviate any concerns you have about the confusing timelines created after the first movie.

All you need to know is Connor is immortal, he wants to chop off the heads of other immortals to take their power, and ultimately, only one immortal can be left to live when all is said and done.
