Marvel’s Netflix Daredevil continues to drive anticipation toward the April 10 premiere, though fans have anxiously awaited a look at the formal costume, rather than the black stealth number Charlie Cox has been sporting in previews. To wit, a new motion poster sees Matt Murdock suiting up, while producers talk costume evolution over the course of the season.

While the latest poster shows Matt donning the same black suit we’ve seen before, Comics Continuum spoke to Marvel boss Joe Quesada (and others) for a little insight into the costume’s evolution over the course of the season. Not only will the suit change from a practical standpoint of Matt’s fight against crime, but also to embrace the identity his crusade cultivates:

We had to come up with a logic for it. It was a delicate balance, because the stories we’re telling are so real-world. Matt starts out in a homemade outfit that develops slowly. As he starts getting the crap kicked out of him on the streets, he adds padding little by little.

Added Stephanie Maslansky, costume designer:

There was definitely a history and mythology that needed to be adhered to, but it also had to seem authentic. It needed to be made of things that anyone could buy on the street, on the Internet or in an army-navy store. We wanted something that looked militaristic and functional, but also dramatic and sexy. It was really tricky to make it both be practical and look, as Joe Quesada likes to say, ‘really bad-ass.’

Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight also chimed in:

He always wore a black mask that was tied in the back. We went through a lot of different versions and did a lot of R&D before settling on something. If you watch very closely, you’ll see the outfit evolve subtly into what we call the black ninja suit. The mask changes. He starts wearing protective pads. Eventually it morphs into the classic suit, because he wouldn’t be Daredevil without it. Getting there is part of the fun.

The idea was to back the story up to the point before Matt is Daredevil. Then we could take him to a place where some version of the red suit works in a grounded world. The solution is very exciting and makes complete sense.

Streaming all 13 episodes in 4K on April 10, here’s now Netflix describes Marvel’s Daredevil:

Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the Super Hero “Daredevil” in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.
Marvel’s Daredevil is one of the best known properties of the street level heroes and will be the the first of four epic live-action adventure series (Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Marvel’s Iron Fist, and Marvel’s Luke Cage, all leading up to the teaming of the main characters in Marvel’s The Defenders) that delves into the backstory of how Matt Murdock evolves into Daredevil.

The show’s New York Comic-Con 2014 panel also revealed the inclusion of Vondie Curtis-Hall as reporter Ben Urich, Man of Steel star Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa (not yet Fisk), and Bob Gunton as Leland Owlsley (The Owl), along with a number of recent supporting additions. Each Marvel Netflix series will shoot 13 episodes, culminating in an eight-episode team-up with The Defenders miniseries and bringing the total to 60 episodes (to start).

We’ve included the latest trailers again below, in addition to the poster below, so keep counting down to the April 10 premiere of Marvel’s Daredevil!
