The era of comics on the PSP has begun to draw to a close. Sony announced yesterday that this week's new comics update would be the last for the aging device, which has become the home of more than 4,000 comics since the service launched in December of 2009. PSP owners needn't worry about losing access to the existing database of digital comics yet as the current stock will still be available for download. The good news? Sony says digital comics are headed to other Sony devices soon. Perhaps the PSP successor the PlayStation Vita? From the PlayStation blog:

Here are the the latest new comics for the PSP. This week will be the final update for digital comics on the PSP. The Digital Comics Team will continue to work on bringing the comic service to other Sony devices. We'll make sure to keep you updated with any future developments right here on the PlayStation.Blog. In the meantime, you can continue to download any of the over 4,000 existing comics from the comic store as usual. Thanks for your support and we hope you continue to enjoy comics on PSP!

With the PlayStation Vita headed to retail before the end of 2011, there's a good chance that digital comics could crop up there before too long. Or better yet, Sony will finally unveil its S1 and S2 tablets and distribute digital comics there, too.
