‘Arrow’ Atom Spinoff Team: Are These Our New Live-Action DC Heroes?

Hard as it was to imagine Arrow spawning yet another spinoff for Brandon Routh’s Atom, The CW did fans one better to develop a major team-up series culling players from both Oliver Queen and The Flash’s world. It’s still daunting to think such a major undertaking will come to pass, but the spinoff’s three secret DC heroes may yet have been revealed.

TVLine managed to obtain casting descriptions for the three DC character roles supposedly comporting the cast of Arrow’s next spinoff, of which the original report claimed that none of the three have been realized in live-action. As with many Arrow and The Flash castings, the use of unfamiliar names obscures their actual identities, though descriptions may offer a clue:

“THE TRAVELER” | Described as a “Han Solo-esque rogue who gets by with his charm, this hero hails from the future, and has journeyed back in time on a secret mission. His razor-sharp wit hides the pain of a man who has lived through serious conflict. He also harbors many secrets, always leaving both his teammates and the audience unsure of his true allegiances.

“FEMALE WARRIOR” | This twentysomething Latina is pretty but unassuming, book smart and socially awkward by day. But by night, when she hears the cry of battle, her fury is ignited and she becomes a fierce warrior — so much so, that sometimes she can become a threat to others.

“MYSTERY HERO” | An African-American male in his twenties will fill the role of a regular, street smart guy who unexpectedly gains powers, and then, as part of the team, regularly quips about the insanity of the situations.

For those not well-versed in comic lore, TVLine theorizes that the “Traveler” might represent comic time-traveler Rip Hunter, a character often utilized in “Crisis” events, and one who the description’s words make sound an awful lot like a TV-size Star-Lord. Worth noting is that TVLine also likens the description to DC future hothead Booster Gold, though the character had already previously appeared in live-action for Smallville.

The “Female Warrior” brings to mind fewer obvious selections from DC lore, suggesting everyone from Fury to Yolanda Montez (a connection with Arrow’s Ted Grant), Pantha or Tarantula. The “Mystery Hero” might prove the most intriguing of all, however, as a potential allusion to Virgil Hawkins, better known as DC hero Static. The character endured an uptick in popularity over the years with WB animated series Static Shock, and might seem a prime candidate for the live-action treatment.

It remains to be seen how far The CW would get with a series tying together Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer, Victor Garber’s Firestorm, Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold or Caity Lotz, but could these three heroes complete the new team? What other DC characters might fit the bill?
