What may go down as one of the worst years in recent memory is slowly crawling to a close, and while we wish it good riddance and hope against hope that 2017 will be an improvement, there is some small solace in looking back over the year that's passed and figuring out what stuff from it was the best. That's right, it's "Best of..." list time, and today we're taking a look at the Best DC Covers of 2016.

Week after week, comic publishers keep the artists they employ hard at work trying to come up with covers that will make you, the jaded comic buying public, stop and pay attention to them as you peruse the sea of titles that adorn the shelves of your local comic shop or digital comic retailer of choice. Desperate to get you to step outside of your pull-list and give some new or not so new book a chance, they metaphorically cry out, "Please! Judge us by our cover!"

And that's why these lists are hard to make. There are always so many fantastic covers!

I dutifully went through all of the hundreds of comics DC published with cover dates between January and December of 2016 and selected the many possible contenders. Then, carefully, surgically, I began the grueling process of whittling those contenders down to a reasonable number. My only criteria was that the cover had to stand out. For whatever reason.

Some of these covers are incredible works of art, some are sure to one day stand as iconic images of the heroes they exhibit, some are just so fun you can't help but notice them, and some are so weird it's hard to believe they actually exist, much less were published. You'll know which one I'm talking about when you see it.
