‘Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers’ Anime Toy Images Arrive Online
Marvel Disc Wars: The Avengers -- perhaps the most prominent team-up between Marvel and Toei since Japanese Spider-Man in 1978 -- still has a few months before it's set to debut on TV in Japan, but Big Bad Toy Store already has a low-res look at its toys from Bandai. The assortment of action figures and transforming disks doesn't necessarily clarify the show's plot, but it is nice to see a more anime-style Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man and the Hulk in articulated 3D.
Set to arrive in April for around $30, the Disk Wars action figures line looks to include Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man and the Hulk, each coupled with some kind of rounded triangle disk. There's also a "Transforming" disk line of toys that alternate between that same rounded triangle shape into an articulated toy of Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man that are slated to run for $16 a pop.
The plot of the Disk Wars show will revolve around Loki turning villain-imprisoning SHIELD tech against the world’s heroes and trapping them in disks (not unlike trapping Pokémon in Pokéballs), leaving Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and Wasp to team with Spider-Man and a group of teens to "save the Earth from ultimate destruction" at his hands. It seems like there will be a mix of conventional superhero action plus disk-based strategy combat that translates well to selling toys, but it's still a little too early to say for certain.
Fans will notice that while Wasp is present in the Disk Wars promo art, she's absent from the toy line so far... as is Loki, the show's main villain. That could potentially change since these images seem pulled from a retailer preorder catalog. Or, even if Wasp isn't slated for release in the first wave, she could always pop up in a second one, along with villains and the civilian-looking Teenvenger kids who will also star in the anime.
