We first learned back in January that TNT had in mind to resurrect the classic Tales From the Crypt with M. Night Shyamalan curating new horror stories, though details were few and far between. Now, the Sixth Sense director at least confirms that the classic “Crypt Keeper” character will return, though perhaps not as we remember.

/Film took the time to ask Shyamalan himself at WonderCon if fans could expect some portrayal of the famous figure voiced by John Kassir, to which the director flatly confirmed “There will.” That said, Shyamalan also admitted at least some consideration toward more seasonal storytelling, even if the new series would likely follow the old episodic format:

You know, I can’t say 100% but I’m thinking right now, where I am, if you’d asked me this six months ago I would have a different answer, but where I am right now it’s more individual Black Mirror kind of stuff right now.

Its new iteration set for fall 2016, Tales From the Crypt is best remembered by its seven-season run on HBO in the ‘90s, despite the show’s origins having roots in the 1950s EC comics. From 1989 to 1996, Tales From the Crypt also hosted countless celebrities as both actor and director, among them Michael J. Fox, Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis.

The new series will also include Ashwin Rajan, James D. Stern, John Santilli, and Dan McKinnon as executive producers.

We’ll hear more as Tales From the Crypt goes into production this year, but will the new Crypt Keeper prove as campy as the old?
