In its penultimate episode, the Telltale Games Fables prequel series The Wolf Among Us went to some dark, surreal places. Next week, the first-season finale, "Cry Wolf," will be available on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, iOS and Steam, and, if the trailer is any indication, it seems to promise to snap things back to a violent, seedy reality.

Then again, maybe it doesn't.

(Warning: Minor spoilers for the first four episodes of The Wolf Among Us ahead.)

The first moments of the trailer replay moments from the previous four episodes, but since the images are accompanied by laudatory quotes from reviews, it seems they're just a sort of victory lap for Telltale. That's not quite so clear when the trailer reaches its final moments.

One of the last clips in the trailer is a moment from the very first scene of the very first episode of The Wolf Among Us, the one in which a doomed prostitute named Faith tells Bigby Wolf he's not as bad as he seems. Perhaps that flashback is there to hammer home some dramatic irony, considering that Bigby appears to go full feral in this episode, but it seems like there's more to it than that.

The entire series so far has been about things not quite being what they seem -- there's a lot of magic involved -- so one has to wonder if this final episode is going to do a big curtain reveal that changes the context of the entire game. Or maybe the story will turn out to be one big circle? Given how strange and David Lynch-like the end of Episode 4 was, I halfway expect it. And the title, "Cry Wolf," suggests some artifice at play.

Either way, I'm excited. "Cry Wolf" will be available on PC and PlayStation 3 July 8, with a release on Xbox 360 July 9 and iOS July 10.
