Telltale’s Walking Dead: Michonne Mini-Series Set to Slay This Month
While February is traditionally a big month for The Walking Dead fans, what with the television show's current season's second half kicking off, it's about to get even bigger. Later this month, Telltale Games will return to the world of The Walking Dead, delving for the very first time into the lives of characters from the comics. Though Telltale has been telling stories in its games that take place in the comic book universe, The Walking Dead: Michonne marks the first time players will be in control of people not created specifically for the games.
As you might recall when the teaser trailer dropped in December, TWD: Michonne will feature the self-reliant bad-ass of Rick's survivors and deal with Michonne's personal quest to find answers about what happened to her family during the time leap in the comics. Michonne (played by Samira Wiley) left Alexandria a short time after she and the rest of the survivors fended off Negan's attacks, and didn't return until about two years later. Telltale's three-episode mini-series will hopefully bring about some answers as to why she left, where she went, and give Michonne more characterization than just being a reclusive hard-ass.
Though there's not a new trailer yet, Telltale did share new screenshots from the first episode of TWD: Michonne. It appears that most of what happens in the game will happen in the current timeline, though there are some hints that Michonne might flashback to a simpler, pre-outbreak time as well. Pete, the captain of The Companion, the ship Michonne returns on in issue #139, appears to play a big role, too. That makes sense given that Michonne comes back to Alexandria on his ship. It'll be nice to see him get a bit more development beyond the three lines of dialogue he had in the comic, too.
Prior to the premiere of The Walking Dead on AMC, Telltale will debut an extended look at The Walking Dead: Michonne on its YouTube channel. The developers will play through the first five minutes of the first episode, and give a glimpse into what drives Michonne to finally embark on this quest after being with Rick and the others for so long. I'll probably skip it since I don't want to spoil the game for myself, but if you're at all curious what this game is all about, you may want to tune in.
The Walking Dead: Michonne's first episode, "In Too Deep," will arrive on Feb. 23 (mobile gets it on Feb. 25), with episode two, "Give No Shelter," coming in March, and the third episode, "What We Deserve," dropping in April. The game will be available on all Xbox, PlayStation, iOS, Android and PC platforms at launch for $14.99, which includes all three episodes.
