‘Burl & Fur’ Zine Launches Kickstarter To Celebrate The Beefy World Of Bara
There are a lot of things manga does a lot better than the western comics scene. Whether it's stories about cooking, race cars or tennis, manga's genre diversity is through the roof. One area where manga really excels is in its portrayal of beefy dudes, but now the west is finally catching up thanks the recently launched Kickstarter for a zine dedicated to hot hairy men, Burl & Fur.
Taking its cues from Japanese bara manga, Burl & Fur is an illustration ‘zine featuring an astonishingly talented roster of artists providing their take on a genre filled with bears, butts and bellies. Curated by Irene Koh, Paul Reinwand, Ricardo Bessa & Kevin Jay Stanton, the project has been in the works for over a year and is now available to pre-order on Kickstarter.
Although sexy and often suggestive, the curators point out that Burl & Fur is not a pornographic magazine, but rather an artistic tribute to a genre underrepresented outside of Japan. The sixty-page ‘zine will feature work from over forty artists, including Kris Anka, Kevin Wada, and Babs Tarr.
The Kickstarter campaign runs until April 29th, and the rewards range from a PDF copy of the ‘zine to physical copies and even prints of work by artists such as Natalie Andrewson and Jen Bartel. There’s not much word on stretch goals at this time, but the Kickstarter does mention that there will be additional print sets added in the near future.
