After launching a four-issue miniseries (later expanded to an ongoing series) based on "Darkwing Duck," a superhero parody spun off from "DuckTales," Boom! Studios is returning to the Disney Afternoon once again with an ongoing "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers" comic that launches this December. "Rescue Rangers" will be scripted by Ian Brill, the writer of the "Darkwing Duck" miniseries, and artist Leonel Castellani.

We had a chance to speak with Brill about the new series, the Gadget cult in Russia, and whether we can expect more Disney Afternoon comics from Boom! Studios.

ComicsAlliance: Were you a fan of the Rescue Rangers growing up? Do you have a favorite episode or character?

Ian Brill: Yeah, I looked forward to it and all the shows when the Disney Afternoon was in its prime. For "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," I have to say my favorite episode is "The Case of the Cola Cult." It's got mystery, adventure, a great concept, satirical elements and great character development, especially for Gadget. I do enjoy all the characters, although I can say Monterey Jack is particularly fun to write.

CA: Any thoughts on the cult devoted to Gadget in Russia? Do you think they will enjoy the comic?

IB: We did see that, yes. What can I say? A character as great as Gadget is going to make an impact. If any of them can read English and can get their hands on the book I hope they enjoy it.

CA: How faithful will the comic be to the tone of the original show? Will there be any influence from the original cartoon shorts?

IB: It'll be faithful to the old show if I do my job right! I do study the show to get the characters and the feel of the show down. The old shorts are a help to show the kind of comedy you can get with Chip and Dale's interactions.

CA: Will you be focusing on done-in-one issues that track a single case, or will we see stories that continue from issue to issue?

IB: For the first four issues of this continuing series we're going to give readers an epic. This is a story that spans the globe, giving the team their biggest challenge yet. They will take on challenges in exciting locales, but this adventure will ask a lot of the characters themselves. If we pull this off, watching our heroes overcome both internal and external struggles will make for a good story.

CA: What have you learned from doing "Darkwing Duck" that you plan to bring to the table in "Rescue Rangers"?

IB: I like to think I learned how to structure a book so that it has room for character moments as well as moments of excitement and suspense. Now I have to do that in a story where I have five main characters! The challenge for the writer is finding a way to make all the big exciting bits matter by making the reader really care about whom all this stuff is happening around.

CA: Tease one thing from the upcoming series that will make Rescue Rangers fans immediately preorder it.

IB: I don't know if this quite counts as a teaser but here goes: "Ducktales" got a movie, "Goof Troop" got a movie...this is me and a whole bunch of way more talented people giving "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers" the big epic story they deserve.

CA: Should we be expect any more comics based on the Disney Afternoon from you or Boom!? (Please say TaleSpin, please say TaleSpin...)

IB: It's rare that we hear "TaleSpin." Most of the feedback about wanting more Disney Afternoon shows ask us about "Gummi Bears." All I can is that since "Darkwing Duck" did well we got "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers." If this book does well there are certainly many great options for Boom! to consider.

CA: Since Watson and Holmes, have two minds so fine looked under every stone?

IB: Clearly, no. These two gumshoes are picking up the slack. There's no case too big, no case too small. When you need help...just pre-order CHIP 'N DALE RESCUE RANGERS #1, this December from BOOM!
