Gotham isn’t exactly making secret of Cameron Monaghan’s smiling return as Jerome Valeska in 2017, but his won’t be the only familiar face back from the dead. Our first synopsis for 2017 premiere “Ghosts” also reveals Paul Reubens back in his role as Oswald Cobblepot’s father, but how?

A first official synopsis for January 16 return “Ghosts” offers just a bit more insight into the deceased Jerome Valeska suddenly reappearing after the character’s Season 2 death, also teasing the fallout of Jim having to shoot Mario Falcone. Not only that; it seems the pressure of Oswald’s troubled Mayoral tenure is getting to him, perhaps seeing “Ghosts” of his late father:

THE THINGS THAT HAUNT US ON AN ALL-NEW “GOTHAM” MONDAY, JANUARY 16, ON FOX

Cameron Monaghan and Paul Reubens Return

Falcone places a hit on Gordon after learning that he shot Mario. Gordon and Bullock discover a follower of Jerome (guest star Cameron Monaghan), who plans to bring him back to life. Meanwhile, Penguin spirals out of control before the biggest television interview of his Mayoral career, and Bruce and Selina deal with Selina’s mom’s return to Gotham in the all-new “Mad City: Ghosts” episode of GOTHAM airing Monday, Jan. 16 (8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GTH-312) (TV-14 L, V)

Guest Cast: Ivana Milicevic as Maria Kyle, Paul Reubens as Elijah Van Dahl, Cameron Monaghan as Jerome Valeska, John Doman as Carmine Falcone, David Dastmalchian as Dwight Pollard, PJ Marshall as Cole Clemons, Jan Maxwell as Margaret Hearst, Dave Quay as Tarquin

As we previously noted, David Dastmalchian actually played an acolyte of The Joker’s in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, lending a meta sheen to Jerome’s presumable future as the clown prince of crime.
