Sam Alexander and Richard Rider Team-Up In Loveness and Perez’s ‘Nova’ #1 [NYCC 2016]
In the fallout of Civil War II, there's a lot of tension in the Marvel Universe, especially between the older generation of heroes and their successors. Marvel's upcoming Divided We Stand branding is set to bring a lot of strife to the hero community, between the likes of The Avengers and The Champions, Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel, The Infamous Iron Man and Ironheart and more.
However, that doesn't seem to be the case in December's Nova #1 by Jeff Loveness and Ramón Pérez, which sees Sam Alexander teaming up with his recently resurrected predecessor Richard Rider to learn from each other and become better heroes in the process.
Today at New York Comic Con, Marvel released more details about the title including a look at the first two covers and some of Pérez's designs for the characters.
The biggest takeaway from the new designs for both Novas is that Sam Alexander is now being drawn to more accurately represent his Latino heritage. Marvel Comics has come under fire this year for whitewashing characters in titles such as New Avengers, Extraordinary X-Men and Web Warriors, so it's great to see Pérez's designs for Sam incorporate his ethnicity.
As for Richard Rider, he certainly got a whole lot hunkier under Pérez's pen, and the covers for the first two issues seem to be taking the two Novas into some classic Jim Starlin-esque cosmic trippiness. It looks like Thanos is hanging out menacingly in the background to Nova #1, so it'll be interesting to see what role the Mad Titan has to play in the book as well as how the two Novas interact and co-exist as a team.
